Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, or CPTED, is based on the premise that the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear of crime and incidence of crime, and to an improvement in quality of life.

Heather Fleury, a certified CPTED specialist, will offer practical advice on how to make your home, your street, even your neighbourhood, safer through the application of design principles that make it more difficult to carry out inappropriate activities.

Facial Recognition

This course will introduce you to the value and importance of being able to view an individuals’ face and recalling, at a later date, the features of that face. This could be helpful in the identification of a person who is of interest to police. You will be shown the methods and ideas on how to become better at facial recognition.
Ron Morier is a 30-year member of the RCMP and was the Facial Identification Specialist at their National Headquarters in Ottawa during his last four years of service. He now teaches at the Northwest Law Enforcement Academy and also volunteers with the Winnipeg Police Service Community Volunteer Program.
Presenter: Ron Morier - Northwest Law Enforcement Academy

Conflict Reduction Strategies

Sometimes conflict just seems to be a fact of life. We've all seen situations where different people with different goals and needs have come into conflict. And we've all seen the personal animosity that can result. The fact that conflict exists, however, is not necessarily a bad thing: as long as it is resolved effectively, it can lead to personal and professional growth. Effective conflict reduction strategies can make the difference between positive and negative outcomes.

Ron Hayes, owner and principal facilitator of the consulting firm, Centre for Professional Excellence, puts an entertaining spin on a serious topic to show us strategies we can use to reduce conflict prior to it occurring, as well as once it's occurred.

Manitoba Justice’s Public Safety Investigations

Almost a decade ago, Manitoba put a law in place to make communities and neighbourhoods safer. The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act was the first of its kind in Canada. It works by holding property owners accountable for threatening or disturbing activities that regularly take place on their property.

Investigator and former Winnipeg Police Service officer Ron Hodgins will provide an overview of how his department uses the SCNA to resolve these issues, as well as describe the great success they’ve achieved in communities all over Manitoba. He’ll also tell you how you can work with Public Safety Investigations to close down problem properties in your community.
